True art comes from knowing the materials that you are using: knowing the materials you use comes from working with them intimately throughout the process. I am profoundly DIY in everything that I make. Not only do I build my own stretched canvases, but manufacture my own paint from raw materials. Through the grinding of pigments with oils and wax, the colors become an extension of my own consciousness. I become able to put myself into the paint, wherein every painting is as such a self portrait regardless of the subject.
